Windrose, a pirate-themed PvE survival game from developer Kraken Express, launched into Steam Early Access on April 14 with none of the orchestrated spectacle that typically precedes a top-ten hit. No stage reveal at a Keighley production. No months of influencer embargoes. No cinematic trailer campaign backed by a licensed pop song. Just a $29.99 early access game about building, crafting, and fighting on the high seas — reportedly drawing concurrent player counts comparable to full-priced AAA releases on Steam’s charts.
As of May 16, Windrose sits at 52,658 concurrent players, according to Steam data — reportedly comparable to Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios’ $59.99 Game of the Year winner with a Metacritic score of 96 and nearly 500,000 reviews. Nobody predicted this comparison a month ago. Nobody could have.
The Trajectory
The numbers tell a wild story. GameRant reports Windrose hit an all-time peak of over 222,000 concurrent players during its first weeks. French outlet GameKult confirms the game has now crossed two million copies sold — up from the 1.5 million milestone developer Kraken Express announced earlier in May. Analysts cited by GameKult estimate the game generated $30 million in revenue within its first ten days alone.
TweakTown reported that at its height, Windrose claimed the number one spot on Steam’s best-seller chart, displacing Counter-Strike 2 — an achievement almost unheard of for a debut title with no established IP or major publisher backing. The game has since settled into the top ten, currently ranked sixth, but its concurrent player count is still climbing at +27.9%.
Player sentiment reinforces the commercial success. Windrose holds a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, with 89% of 24,692 reviews coming in positive.
What’s Actually Working
Windrose pitches itself as a PvE survival adventure set in an alternate Age of Piracy. The DNA is recognizable — build, craft, survive, explore — but the execution is resonating far beyond the usual survival-crafting niche. Players navigate procedurally generated biomes, clear hand-crafted dungeons, engage in souls-lite combat with dodges and rolls, and command ships in naval battles complete with boarding actions.
The top Steam reviews are revealing. Top Steam reviews praise the open-world survival crafting and base building, with many players noting that the game exceeded their expectations despite not typically enjoying the genre. That kind of genuine surprise — players won over against their own instincts — is the stuff that builds a grassroots hit.
Then there’s the publishing credit. Windrose is co-published by Pocketpair Publishing, the Japanese company behind Palworld — another early access title that exploded onto Steam with minimal prerelease fanfare and massive player adoption. Whatever Pocketpair’s process is for identifying and amplifying these projects, the track record is becoming hard to ignore.
The Road Ahead
Kraken Express isn’t coasting on launch momentum. According to IGN, the studio has already shipped an update adding over 40 new building pieces and more than 50 quality-of-life fixes, alongside improvements to connectivity, stability, and performance, including reduced load on SSDs. A new direct feedback platform called windrose.support is live in beta, letting players report bugs and vote on feature suggestions.
The first major content drop is called Ashlands, described by the developer as “a dangerous new biome taken over by undead and covered in volcanic ash.” GameRant reports it’s expected no earlier than late October. Kraken Express has said the full 1.0 release will contain roughly 50% more content than the current Early Access build, including additional biomes, bosses, enemies, ships, and story content. Console versions are planned post-1.0.
Windrose is the kind of hit that defines a Steam season — the game that showed up unannounced, delivered on its promises, and climbed the charts on the strength of players actually enjoying it. No artificial scarcity. No FOMO pipeline. Sometimes that’s enough.
