Two million people on a beach, under a full moon, drones spelling “I love you Brazil” overhead while a 49-year-old Colombian woman in her host country’s national colors let three decades of Latin pop history pour out.

Shakira’s free concert on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach on Saturday was one of the biggest live crowds ever assembled for a single performer. Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere confirmed the figure on X: “Two million people. The she-wolf made history in Rio.”

The show was part of her “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” world tour, built around her 2024 album and a message of resilience after her very public separation from footballer Gerard Piqué. She closed with “BZRP Music Sessions #53/66,” the diss track born from that breakup.

Copacabana has become Rio’s venue for the superlatively huge. Madonna drew 1.6 million in 2024; Lady Gaga pulled 2.1 million last year. City Hall estimated Shakira’s show would inject roughly $155 million into the local economy.

The week was not without darkness. A 28-year-old worker, Gabriel de Jesus Firmino, died during stage construction when he was crushed between two elevators. Police are investigating the stage company for alleged safety violations. Shakira has not publicly commented on the death.

For fans who camped overnight on the sand and flew in from across Brazil, the night was about something larger than a set list. As one fan told AFP: “She loves Brazil so much and the love she has for us is the love we have for her.”
