$20 billion is what it costs to tell Nvidia you have alternatives.
OpenAI has agreed to pay Cerebras more than $20 billion over the next three years for servers powered by the chip startup’s unconventional wafer-scale processors, The Information reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter. The deal includes roughly $1 billion from OpenAI to fund data center construction and warrants that could give OpenAI an equity stake of up to 10% in Cerebras.
Cerebras could announce the deal as soon as Friday, when it unveils paperwork for its initial public offering, according to the report.
The agreement dramatically expands what was already a significant partnership. In January, OpenAI announced a deal worth more than $10 billion to deploy 750 megawatts of Cerebras compute capacity through 2028. The new figure suggests either a substantial expansion of that commitment or a more complete accounting of its total value.
Architecture as strategy
Cerebras does not make conventional chips. Its Wafer Scale Engine uses an entire silicon wafer as a single processor, rather than cutting the wafer into hundreds of individual units. The company claims this eliminates the memory and communication bottlenecks that slow inference on GPU-based systems, delivering responses up to 15 times faster. Independent benchmarking firm Artificial Analysis has ranked Cerebras as the fastest AI inference provider across hundreds of models.
For OpenAI, the appeal is straightforward: faster inference means better user experience, which means more usage and higher-value workloads. “Cerebras adds a dedicated low-latency inference solution to our platform,” said Sachin Katti, who leads compute infrastructure at OpenAI, in a January blog post. “That means faster responses, more natural interactions, and a stronger foundation to scale real-time AI to many more people.”
But speed is only part of the calculation. The deal is also about supply chain independence.
The multi-vendor playbook
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told investors in November that “everything that OpenAI does runs on Nvidia today.” That statement was accurate at the time. It is becoming less so by the month.
OpenAI now has infrastructure agreements spanning the entire chip ecosystem: $100 billion committed with Nvidia for 10 gigawatts of GPU capacity, 6 gigawatts from AMD across multiple hardware generations, 10 gigawatts of custom AI accelerators from Broadcom, and a $38 billion cloud deal with Amazon Web Services, according to CNBC. Add Cerebras to the mix, and OpenAI has effectively built a compute portfolio that no single supplier can hold hostage.
The equity stake is the tell. Warrants for up to 10% of Cerebras give OpenAI a financial interest in the chipmaker’s success — and a powerful incentive structure that goes beyond a simple vendor relationship. OpenAI struck a similar arrangement with AMD, which issued warrants for up to 160 million shares.
Cerebras’ coming of age
The deal caps a remarkable turnaround for Cerebras. When the company filed for its IPO in September 2024, a single customer — the UAE-based G42 — accounted for 87% of revenue in the first half of that year. Quarterly revenue was roughly $70 million. The IPO was pulled a month later.
Eighteen months on, Cerebras counts Meta, IBM, the US Department of Defense, and the Mayo Clinic among its customers. A February funding round valued the company at $23 billion, up from $4 billion in 2021. Analysts estimate full-year 2025 revenue at $300 to $350 million, per Daloopa research.
That implies a roughly 65x revenue multiple — a valuation that demands near-flawless execution to justify.
The CFIUS review that previously blocked the IPO was resolved in March 2025, clearing the path to public markets. Cerebras is expected to refile its paperwork imminently.
The questions that remain
Delivering on the commitment is the hard part. Wafer-scale chips are notoriously difficult to manufacture at high yield. Building out 750 megawatts of data center capacity by 2028 is an ambitious infrastructure project by any standard. Any manufacturing defect or supply chain disruption would directly affect ChatGPT’s user experience — and would be very public.
Then there is the matter of Sam Altman’s personal investment in Cerebras, which has been publicly reported. The OpenAI CEO has a financial stake in a company now receiving $20 billion from the organization he leads — a conflict-of-interest dynamic that will likely draw scrutiny from regulators and investors alike.
The AI chip market is no longer a one-horse race. Nvidia remains dominant, but OpenAI is methodically ensuring it never has to depend entirely on a single supplier again. For a company spending hundreds of billions on compute, $20 billion on an alternative is not a bet — it is insurance.
