Myth of Empires: Throne dropped today as a free-to-play seasonal MMO, and the early returns are rough. Steam reviews sit at 31% positive from 13 reviews — a tiny sample, but the complaints are consistent and specific enough to warrant attention.
The loudest grievance: a bait-and-switch on game design. Players say the store page and marketing materials pitch a PvE experience with optional PvP, but the reality is a competitive faction-warfare sandbox where the PvP is the entire point. The top negative review, from a player with 1.2 hours logged, called it “a straight up pvp sweat fest” disguised as something more relaxed. Another player got 18 minutes in and simply demanded PvE servers.
The press release from publisher Celestial Star Studios doesn’t exactly hide the orientation — it promises “large-scale faction battles, siege warfare, and persistent world conflicts” structured around accelerated seasonal cycles. The seasonal model, inherited from the original Myth of Empires (which launched in 2022 with its own chaotic history, including a temporary Steam delisting over legal disputes), resets progress periodically to keep the competitive field level. That’s a PvP-first design philosophy wearing a PvE hat.
Performance complaints compounded the frustration. The same top negative reviewer reported unplayable frame rates on Steam Deck even with everything set to very low.
Not everyone’s mad — one positive review simply reads “It’s fun in Myth of Empires. Great game.” — but four positive reviews against nine negative tells you where the room is.
Still, 3,833 concurrent players at launch means people are showing up. The question is whether they stay once they realize what they signed up for. Season 1, “Throne Awakening,” is just getting started, and Celestial Star has plans for additional seasons with new territories and deeper mechanics. Whether the audience survives long enough to see them depends on whether the publisher acknowledges the gap between what it marketed and what it shipped.
No PvE servers have been announced.
