Air raid sirens. Then seconds of silence. Then an explosion above one of the most contested squares of land on Earth.
Fragments from an intercepted Iranian ballistic missile struck Jerusalem’s Old City on Friday, scattering debris across the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Armenian Patriarchate, the Jewish Quarter, and the Temple Mount compound near Al-Aqsa Mosque. The main impact hit a parking lot in the Jewish Quarter, roughly 400 metres from both the Western Wall and Al-Aqsa — close enough to rattle windows at sites sacred to three religions.
No injuries were reported at the Old City impact site, according to Israeli medics. Police sealed off the area and searched a nearby playground for additional fragments as soldiers moved crowds back just before the start of Shabbat.
The missile was one of nine salvos fired by Iran on March 20, at least three of which carried cluster bomb warheads, according to the Times of Israel. Israeli air defences intercepted the weapon before it reached the ground, but the debris itself carried enough force to damage a road and a wall near Dung Gate, one of the Old City’s seven functional entrances.
The strike came on the 21st day of open conflict between Iran and the US-Israel coalition, which began with airstrikes on Iranian territory on February 28. Iran has since launched repeated missile and drone barrages at targets across Israel and the wider Gulf region, including strikes on the UAE, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia reported the same day.
Israel’s foreign ministry said the attack targeted “holy sites used by multiple faith communities” and that “Israel, meanwhile, acts to protect worshippers of all faiths in its capital city.” The IDF dispatched Home Front Command search and rescue teams to impact sites across central Israel.
A parking lot crater is not a demolished cathedral. But a ballistic missile detonating over the Old City — where every stone carries millennia of meaning — needs no embellishment to register its weight.
