HEXA hit Steam on May 13 carrying something it never had on the Playdate: color. Also, potentially a player base larger than a dentist’s waiting room.
Developer Rae’s hexagonal puzzle game debuted on Panic’s crank-driven handheld in July 2024, where it racked up four Playdate Community Award nominations — Best Puzzle Game, Best Arcade Game, Accomplishment in Accessibility, and Continued Support. Now it’s on Steam for $8, and the lone early reviewer nailed the pitch: “this game was super cool on Playdate, and now it’s in color!!!”
They’re right. HEXA plays like a 2D Rubik’s Cube — you rotate hexagonal clusters of triangles to form solid-color shapes, racing a timer in arcade mode or grinding through 50 unique missions. On Playdate, the game was monochrome by hardware necessity: white, gray, and black triangles on a no-backlight screen. The Steam port gives those triangles actual, distinct hues. A small change that matters more than you’d think when you’re scanning a board at speed.
The Playdate version built something real. According to Playdate Unofficial, players in the Playdate Discord ran HEXA daily. The game’s global leaderboard on Panic’s site is topped by a player called GreenMan at 1,000,130 points — roughly 37 times the developer’s own score of 26,650. That’s the kind of grassroots engagement most indie puzzle games never see.
But the Playdate’s installed base is inherently limited, and that’s the calculation every developer faces after shipping on niche hardware: stay exclusive to a devoted crowd, or port to wider platforms and start over. HEXA choosing Steam is a bet that tight design, a low price point, and a proven concept can find a bigger audience than crank enthusiasts alone.
One concurrent player at launch isn’t a victory lap. But the Playdate-to-PC pipeline is starting to produce real ports, and HEXA is exactly the kind of game that benefits — a mechanically sharp puzzle that just needed a larger stage and a full palette.
