Three days after launch, a $9.95 indie visual novel about a young man discovering his sexuality is outselling almost everything on Steam.
Heatwave: Sam’s Stay, developed by solo creator CodyFord, currently sits at #6 on Steam’s Top Sellers chart — above most new AAA releases, and firmly in territory usually reserved for games with eight-figure budgets. The catalyst: Steam’s Featured Win placement, which put the game in front of every visitor to the storefront.
The numbers tell the story. 94% Very Positive from 83 reviews. 341 concurrent players at time of writing. 10,000 wishlists and roughly 40,000 demo downloads on itch.io before the May 28 launch. That’s not a viral moment — that’s a waiting audience that converted the second the doors opened.
Players aren’t just here for the romance, either. Reviews highlight the puzzles, hidden story elements, and mini-games as standout features. One player called it “genuinely one of my favorite Gay VN’s I’ve ever played,” praising the lack of bugs and the quality of the experience across the board. Another flagged the AI-assisted assets and inconsistent voice acting as drawbacks, but still recommended it.
The game delivers over 2,000 CG renders, a fictional dating app called Findr, and branching choices across what CodyFord describes as a “cinematic” narrative. It runs $9.95 during its launch discount, down from $11.99.
What’s worth watching here isn’t the game itself — it’s the Featured Win effect. Steam’s editorial curation remains one of the most powerful levers in PC gaming. One placement slot took a first-time developer’s niche romance title and put it in revenue territory most indie devs never touch. CodyFord has already confirmed shorter, more frequent releases planned going forward.
The grind just got a lot shorter.
