The Wiener Stadthalle arena in Vienna will host 25 countries Saturday night for Eurovision’s 70th anniversary final. Five more will be watching from home — deliberately.
Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Iceland, and Slovenia are boycotting the contest over Israel’s inclusion, making this the largest political boycott in Eurovision history, according to Eurovision historian Dean Vuletic. The total field of 35 contestants is the smallest since 2003.
Inside the arena, the show carries on. Finland’s Pete Parkkonen and classical violinist Linda Lampenius are betting favorites with “Liekinheitin” (“Flamethrower”), a duet that appears to involve actual fire. Australia’s Delta Goodrem has been climbing odds with a ballad performed while suspended above a glittery piano. A Moldovan folk rapper and a Serbian metal band complete a typically eclectic lineup.
Outside, the mood is heavier. Pro-Palestinian groups staged an outdoor concert Friday under the banner “No stage for genocide.” Four protesters were ejected during Israeli contestant Noam Bettan’s semifinal performance, according to NPR. A demonstration is planned ahead of Saturday’s final.
“In the face of illegal war and also genocide, silence is not an option,” Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez said Friday, per The Guardian.
The boycotters are filling their airtime creatively. Spain’s broadcaster will air an alternative music show. Ireland’s RTÉ is screening a 1996 Father Ted episode about priests bombing at a European song contest — described by Extra.ie as “genius trolling” under the headline “My Lovely Boycott.” Slovenia’s RTV will show documentaries on Gaza.
The European Broadcasting Union adopted tougher voting rules after allegations that Israel manipulated public votes in previous years but took no action to exclude it. Israel has denied any improper campaign to influence results.
Vuletic called the crisis one of the most serious the EBU has faced. The contest drew 166 million viewers last year. This year’s five-nation walkout is a financial and reputational blow that sequins cannot disguise.
